Full Expression

I pushed my weight through the pencil tip
to force my words on the page.

I didn’t know there was another way
in the HB world I lived in.

Now I’ve learned, to create a picture
requires a new approach –

a feather light touch that incorporates
the varying textures of graphite, and allows

the image to emerge from light and dark
without obliterating the page beneath.

When the full range of options
from thin lined 2H to thick smudgy 9B

are brought together the depth
and beauty of a subject can emerge.

Ritual Reclaimed

Ritual used to be a few times a year
in uncomfortable clothes
separated from the everyday
a little uncomfortable and off key

until I welcomed her into my home
we sit together by the window with a
steaming cup of coffee and a pen in hand
capturing the whispers of morning

a mantra whispered
a breath, a moment of pause
simple power greater than
that in any ornate cathedral

weaving everyday magic
into the fabric of each day
dressed in comfortable clothes
Ritual is now an old friend
