POETRY CONTEST
2009 Judge: Angela Rydell, Madison
WFOP offers its annual poetry contest for students attending
public, private or parochial schools, or who are home-schooled,
in Wisconsin. Winners will be published in the 2010 Wisconsin
Poets' Calendar.
PRIZES in each division:
- JUNIOR (grades 6–8):
1st $50, 2nd $30, 3rd $20; Honorable Mention
- SENIOR (grades 9–12):
1st $50, 2nd $30, 3rd $20; Honorable Mention
RULES FOR SUBMISSION
- A
student may enter one original poem. Maximum length: 32 lines (including stanza breaks, but not including the title). Longer poems and plagiarized or multiple entries will be eliminated.
- E-mail submission: “WFOP student contest: Student’s last name” in subject line. Send as attachment: Word .doc ONLY, named “(Student’s last name).doc”: 2 pages, formatted as for postal submission.
- Postal submission: submit two copies of the poem, typed on white 8.5 x 11 inch paper in a plain 12-pt font. Do not add graphics or decorations. On the first page:
a) In
the upper left-hand corner, print or type
the student's name, home address, telephone number, and student's current
grade in school.
b) In
the upper right-hand corner, print or
type the teacher's name, school's name, school's complete mailing address, and school telephone number (home-schoolers:
indicate home-school association, if applicable.
c) Important! At
the bottom, include
the following statement: "This is my original
work," (followed by the student's signature
if a postal submission). The poem must be the student's
original work to be considered
for
the contest.
On the second page: NOTHING BUT THE POEM—no names or initials.
- A
student’s previously-published poem, or a poem that
has won an award is still eligible. Please include publishing
or award information on the second copy.
- NO
POEMS WILL BE RETURNED. KEEP A COPY FOR YOUR OWN RECORDS.
All
poems will be recycled after the contest is over. For a list
of winners, include an e-mail address or enclose a business-sized
SASE.
- DEADLINE:
Entries must be e-mailed or postmarked by February
2, 2009.
