STUDENT POETRY CONTEST!

2008 Judge:  Jeri McCormick, Madison (sample poem)

WFOP offers its annual poetry contest for students attending public, private or parochial schools or being home-schooled in Wisconsin: JUNIOR DIVISION (grades 6-8) and SENIOR DIVISION (grades 9-12).

PRIZES: (prize money has been increased this year!)

  • JUNIOR: 1st $50, 2nd $30, 3rd $20; Honorable Mention
  • SENIOR: 1st $50, 2nd $30, 3rd $20; Honorable Mention

Winners from each division will be published in the Wisconsin Poets' Calendar 2009.

RULES FOR SUBMISSION

  • A student may enter one original poem. Maximum length: 32 lines or 300 words, whichever is less, not including the title. Longer poems will be eliminated.
  • E-mail poems by pasting the poem and the necessary information in the body of the e-mail, or attach as a Word .doc, or submit via postal mail to address below.
  • If a postal submission, enclose 2 copies of the poem typed on standard plain white 8.5" by 11" paper. Use an ordinary 12-pt font. Do not add additional graphics or decorations. One copy should contain NOTHING BUT THE POEM ITSELF. No names or initials. The second copy must contain the following information:
    1. In the upper left hand corner, print or type the student's name, home address and the student's current grade in school.
    2. In the upper right hand corner, print or type the school's name, school's
      complete mailing address, and phone number. Home-schoolers: please indicate
      home-school group or association, if applicable.
    3. Important! At the bottom, or on an attached sheet of paper, include the following statement: "This is my original work," (followed by the student's signature if a postal submission). The poem must be the student's original work to be considered for the contest.
  • A student’s previously-published poem, or a poem that has won an award is still eligible. Please include publishing or award information on the first copy.
  • NO POEMS WILL BE RETURNED. KEEP A COPY FOR YOUR OWN RECORDS. All poems will be recycled after the contest is over. For a list of winners, enclose an e-mail address or a business-sized SASE.
  • DEADLINE: Entries must be e-mailed or postmarked by February 1, 2008.
