Danish Bakery
by Debra Hall
If we had stayed in another town
on the end of a tree lined street
past the neighbor
with a palm reader sign
out front,
We would have had
a different ending,
you might be chewing tobacco
on the porch now
I might be smoking a blunt
in the basement.
We would have missed
those days of cream-filled
middles...
when you took some time
to write a book
that never was published
and we ate orange
dreamsicles
and you found who
you wanted to be.
After you died,
I took some time
to wander, find out
who I wanted to be.
came home to
this Danish kringle town
it's delicate layers of frosting
and cake
it's delicious
fruit and cream-filled
middle.
