Picture loons falling out of the sky
with shiny iced wings, haunting
thick bodies of feathers—
crash -landing in ponds and fields
unable to walk
legs too far back on their form
requiring a quarter mile of water
for take off
like the 737 of birds.
I wonder what
red marble eyes see
as they’re falling—
Is it cool blue earth clouded
with vapors and smoke
draped with green stalks
small cut-outs of pools
smeared among trees and hills
or mind-clouded terror
as they plummet gravitationally down.
Would children, looking up
think the sky was falling
as these birds break through the cumulus.
Other bodies have fallen
from a NY Tower, from the edge of a canyon
from mountains, from burning houses
some accidental, some on purpose.
But they were not made of plumes
to fly like birds.
These loons with expectations
of staying in the air
everything happening as it should
wouldn’t that be the hope.
