Innocence in the Depths of Winter

For Logan

The golden glow of a fireplace
a garland of valentines strung
across the mantel: red hearts
tiny white and grey snowballs.

Outside a winter wonderland
tall pine trees with tufts
of crisp snow tucked in branches,
red cardinals flit to and fro
with soft swirls of lake effect snow.

Inside a cherub with pink lips
slumbering in my arms
tiny baby sighs,
after Covid’s darkness.

Such innocence in a new year
as the yellow watchdog
sits near the fire at my feet
