Ambition is Laid to Rest

On Christmas Day I assemble a revelation
that changes my life forever.

It comes in small boxes via email, several
arriving each day bearing the message:
“Georgia needs your help, Georgia!” or
“Georgia, please help us win Georgia!”

I dutifully do my bit to flip the Senate,
press the Donate button twice a week,
am triple-matched to save Democracy
and the Constitution of the U.S.A.

But not till Christmas Day do I fully
appreciate that my name is on the lips
and minds of millions of people
in this country and around the globe!

Besides being doubled in emails and my
gifts triple-matched by rich donors, my
name in the news may actually remind
friends from years ago of my existence,

cause some to wonder if I’m still alive,
a few to remember good times and wish
me well—all this without my having to
lift a finger now or in the future!

I happily cross off “15 minutes of fame”
from my bucket list, recognizing this
moment as the pinnacle of my career,
never to be bested. Instead of striving,

I can spend my time reading, scribbling,
ignoring deadlines, medicating last
itches of ambition, smiling a lot, and
saying, “Georgia thanks you, Georgia!”
