Love at the Casbah on a Monday Night, 1988

For Peter

Rice so perfect it can make you cry
nutty and fragrant, each kernel alive
with sauce, exotic to my Wisconsin mind
rosewater, coriander, cumin and thyme

Persian spices adorn this dish
apricots, artichokes, almonds and fish
so flakey, extravagant, buttery rich
warm Naan to scoop, mint tea and a pinch

of honey to sweeten, to savor the spice
This date has been extremely nice
Baklava by candlelight
layers unfolding into the night.
