Secondhand Awe

The day stood still—if just for a moment
when we left the eye clinic
my legally blind husband
wearing his new specialty contacts

took it in slowly, like a deep, deep breath
tried out his new–fangled depth perception
stepped down the curb without being told
no guiding hand at his elbow

and riding down the highway, craned his neck
to remember what is the same
and what is new over these dark few years
before the corneal transplant

but when he stopped dead
mid–aisle in the grocery store
and looked up, able to read every sign
his expression was pure awe

and I, watching him
awestruck and thankful
for this brief moment in time
the wonders of science
and hope for the future
